Thoughts as the new year approaches

I'm currently reading a collection of essays on the history of Canada. One, A British Official's View of Canada, 1928, by Geoffrey Whiskard, contained a line I liked: "...they seem...to have left room in their lives for something other than the mere thirst for wealth."

I once wrote down a list of things that were important to me, and it included things like nature, light, music, creativity, and learning new things. All of those are attainable for me. All of those can be found no matter where I live. While wealth can certainly help you obtain some of the things you seek, and I wouldn't turn it down if it tossed itself in my lap, it's the intangibles that are most important. Sometimes we get so caught up in the daily grind that we forget to stop and think what it's all for.

As the earth begins to turn back toward the light, as the old year coasts out on the melting snow, I want to take the time to remember what's truly important. Every year I choose a theme to focus on -- health, emergency preparedness, family history, etc. For 2026, I haven't been able to pinpoint exactly what I want to emphasize, but it will be something to do with those intangibles. Personal peace, maybe. Letting go of the mindsets that may have served the old me but don't help who I am now. Seeking out light. Taking action instead of  just watching. Seizing the moment. Not sure yet quite how to frame it. I still have a few days, yet, to pin it down.
